CSCS cards and the role of the construction client

CSCS is encouraging clients who are serious about improving site safety and productivity to push their contractors to use electronic card checks. All construction clients will be familiar with the CSCS cards, now used by the industry to provide proof that individuals working on construction sites have the necessary training and qualifications to complete the job they are employed to do. These cards are intended to bring about improvements in standards and safety on sites, however, this is only achieved if rigorous card-checking is in place and being carried out consistently, and a recent CSCS survey shows that this isn’t always the case. Mental health in construction is a significant issue, with over a third of construction workers having experienced a condition in the past year, and almost a quarter of workers considering leaving the industry due to mental health related issues (Randstad). Crane Signage incident

In a recent incident, an acrylic panel detached from a lightbox on the rear jib of a tower crane, striking a local resident.  


To avoid similar incidents, ensure an inspection is completed on all light boxes and other accessories attached to tower cranes.

Crane manufacturers approval must be sought when accessories (such as signs, lightboxes and lights) are attached to tower cranes and mechanical fixings must be used to secure panels.

From a design perspective, attachments must be designed to take both wind loads and dynamic forces and approved by temporary works.

An inspection and maintenance regime must be put in place and followed.
