Yesterday's Time to Talk Day has become an annual event aimed at bringing the nation together to get talking and break the silence around mental health problems.
Mental health in construction is a significant issue, with over a third of construction workers having experienced a condition in the past year, and almost a quarter of workers considering leaving the industry due to mental health related issues (Randstad).
Furthermore, low-skilled construction workers are at a far greater risk of suicide, at 3.7 times the national average for England and Wales (Office of National Statistics), and we know that in many cases, people who complete suicide had never reached out for support.
As construction clients, we have a responsibility for the health and safety of the workers on our construction projects, this includes their mental health.
There is a wealth of resources available on tackling mental health, including Mates in Mind, a scheme set up to raise awareness, address the stigma of poor mental health and improve positive mental wellbeing in the UK construction industry.
This short video gives a powerful message from the son of a suicide victim, worth investing 60 seconds of your time to watch, and encouraging others to do the same.
