UK lacks skills and capacity to deliver major infrastructure, PAC warns

 

The UK Government and wider economy lack the necessary skills and capacity to deliver ambitious plans for major infrastructure over the next five years. Department for Energy Security and Net Zero announces £557 million for public buildings to switch to cleaner heating systems

 

On Wednesday (15 May), the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero announced a round of funding to improve the heating systems of public buildings. Of the total £557 million allocated, £530 million will go towards installation costs of low carbon heating and energy saving measures in schools, hospitals and other public buildings, while £27.5 million will go towards supporting businesses with high energy use to cut their bills and emissions. These new projects are estimated to save the taxpayer £650 million per year to 2037, in addition to advancing progress towards net zero.

 

Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities announces Levelling Up Partnerships rolled out in Scotland for the first time

 

On Friday (10 May) the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities announced Dundee has been chosen as the first area in Scotland to benefit from a tailored £20 million regeneration programme. This is the first of a number of bespoke projects announced in the 2023 Spring Budget to have been rolled out. The scheme aims to tackle barriers to growth and speed up regeneration and directly follows £2.6 million of investment for the V&A Dundee announced at the Spring Budget. 

 

Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities holds forum for collaboration on housing in island communities

 

On Saturday (11 May), the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities announced it had hosted a forum with Levelling Up Secretary Michael Gove alongside representatives from several UK island communities to discuss dynamic approaches to tackling housing challenges. Attendees had the opportunity to visit the MSparc Science and Technology Park to see Anglesey’s innovative work on skills, energy, and housing. This builds on progress from previous forums, including the establishment of a Connectivity Task and Finish Group and a new £1.6 million UK Government project to help improve transport links for island communities.
